Traditional or “prerequisite” remedial education remains a major obstacle for many students striving to access college-level courses. Corequisite remediation removes that obstacle by placing students directly into gateway courses with concurrent student supports. In Tennessee, system-wide implementation of corequisite reform in the state’s 13 community colleges suggests it’s working.
Research shows that the likelihood of students completing a gateway math or English course increases when they are placed in corequisite remediation versus being placed in traditional remediation. By the end of the first year, the odds of a student completing college-level math and English increases by 15% and 13% respectively. The increased likelihood of completion is still evident by the end of the second year.
