Subsequent Course Success
In 2015, Tennessee became the first state system to implement corequisite remediation at all their community colleges. With corequisite remediation, students deemed not college-ready are placed directly into a college-level math course and are provided with learning supports such as concurrent courses, labs, or tutoring. While there’s evidence showing that corequisite remediation helps students access and pass gateway courses, a key question is whether it prepares students for subsequent college-level coursework. A recent study of students on the margins of college readiness suggests that it does.
When compared to similar students placed directly into college-level math, students placed into corequisite math were 8 percentage points more likely to not only enroll in, but also pass a future college-level math course. This data suggests that corequisite remediation does help students prepare for later math course success.
