Colorado Department of Higher Education

Through a competitive application process completed in Spring 2020, the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) is one of seven new grantees selected to seed readiness at systems preparing to implement developmental education reforms at scale.

Spearheaded by the Student Success & Academic Affairs Office at the CDHE, CO-SSTF engages all 31 of its institutions and, with support from Strong Start to Finish, aims to deliver effective, equity-driven, and purpose-focused developmental education advising to close gaps in math and English skills.

Priority Action Areas

CO-SSTF is focused on four priority action areas:

  • Create a productive mindset.
  • Build advising structures to ensure all students register for coursework in sequences provided in program of study at scale.
  • Standardize training on developmental education reforms for advisors.
  • Transform student onboarding to focus on empowering students to make a purposeful program choice.

Strategies at Scale

Through the support and professional networks of Strong Start to Finish, CO-SSTF will scale the following reforms:

  • Create a holistic, student growth focused academic advising certification.
  • Create transfer pathways with purpose.
  • Engage a statewide academic advising council.
  • Build a student success team of faculty and academic advisors.
  • Improve collection and use of data on developmental education.
  • Award innovation mini grants.

CO-SSTF is supported and led by the Chief Student Success & Academic Affairs Officer and the Director of Academic Affairs at the CDHE.
