Completing Developmental Math Courses

This Points of Interest shows that students in the DCMP are much more likely to pass a developmental math course within their first semester than students in traditional developmental math courses.

In 2011, the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin launched the Dana Center Math Pathways (DCMP). The program consists of a one-semester compressed developmental math course, with a college-level statistics or quantitative reasoning course in the second semester. One aim of the DCMP is to help more students enroll in and pass their first college-level math class within their first year of college. A recent study by the Center for the Analysis of Postsecondary Readiness of four Texas colleges that implemented the DCMP program suggests that the program is successful in this goal.

 

When compared to students placed in a traditional developmental math course, students in the DCMP were 36% more likely to have completed their developmental math course at the end of their first semester in college. This data suggests that the DCMP is successful in getting students through developmental math in their first semester, allowing them to enroll in college-level math courses within their first year of college.
