Introductory math courses often act as gatekeeper courses, creating structural barriers that impede students’ progression toward a degree.

In this report, Motivate Lab embarked on a new study to test the effectiveness of supporting students in community college to make connections between course material and their lives.

Learn how embedding a series of reading, writing and reflection exercises — utility-value interventions — in course curriculum can increase student motivation, boost grades and pass rates for first-generation students, and reduce withdrawal rates for all students.
