Nationally, thirty-five percent of students beginning postsecondary education in 2011-2012 year enrolled in a developmental education course by the end of the 2013-2014 year. While large numbers of students from all demographics are placed in ineffective developmental education courses, participation is highest among African Americans and Latinos/as. These observations reinforce the need to maintain a focus on equity as educational reforms such as placement policies, co-requisite course design and guided pathways are implemented.
